OFFICIAL: Chelsea sign Drinkwater on 5-year deal for reported €38m

Chelsea have signed midfielder Danny Drinkwater in a last-gasp €38m deal from Leicester.

The Blues' failed in their bid to take Ross Barkley from Everton with the England man changing his mind on the switch after completing a medical.

But they have secured the services of Drinkwater, 27, who has been on Antonio Conte's radar throughout the summer.

Leicester announced the fee is a club record sale for them.

The move reunites Drinkwater with N'Golo Kante, who he formed an irresistible partnership with as the Foxes won the Premier League in 2015-16.

The Foxes said: "Leicester City wishes to express its gratitude to Danny for his contribution to the team’s achievements over the past five years, as he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the Football Club."

Drinkwater said: ‘I’m delighted to be a Chelsea player and can’t wait to get started. It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies.’

Chelsea's technical director Michael Emenalo added: ‘Danny is not only a Premier League winner but also has Champions League experience which will be invaluable for us this season. He is a typically combative English midfielder with a cultured passing technique and his arrival significantly strengthens our midfield options.’
