Wayne Rooney has pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving at Stockport Magistrates' Court. After the hearing, he has issued a statement expressing his remorse.
The 31-year-old was released on bail after being arrested by Cheshire Police on suspicion of the offence at around 2am on September 1.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police later said: "A man has been charged with drink-driving following a vehicle stop in Wilmslow.
"Wayne Rooney, aged 31, has since been charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit."
Rooney, whose wife Coleen is pregnant with their fourth child, returned to Old Trafford on Sunday for the first time since leaving Manchester United to rejoin Everton.
The former United captain was given a warm welcome and left to a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 82nd minute of a comfortable 4-0 victory for the home side.
There were shouts of “put him in handcuffs” as Rooney arrived at court, according to reports from the scene.
Rooney and two security guards exited a van that pulled up just outside the building.
He then made the short walk to the front doors as he was surrounded by police and photographers.
Rooney to be fined two weeks salary by Everton
Rooney is to be fined two weeks salary worth £320k by Everton, the court heard.
The club is taking a “serious and sensible” approach to the situation.
Rooney’s lawyer also told the court that the footballer acknowledged he had made a “terrible mistake”.
Rooney loses licence for two years, must do unpaid work
Rooney has lost his driving licence for two years. However, the two-year driving ban will be reduced by 24 weeks if he completes a specialist driving court by February 2, 2019.
A judge told him he’s “not convinced” that a high fine will have the same punitive effect as the 12-month community order Rooney was given.
He must also do 100 hours of unpaid community work.
